I wanted to take a moment to thank you deeply for your invaluable mentorship and guidance, which have been instrumental in my growth as a composer. Your teaching to “get the most out of a composition by transcribing it for other instruments” resonated profoundly with me while working on Tea with Debussy and Pärt in Casablanca viola and piano. The piece premiered at AltoFest in October 2023, got me to be finalist in a recent Emerging Canadian Composers and has since taken on a life of its own in new forms. Your wisdom and encouragement have been a constant source of inspiration for me, and I’m so grateful for all that you’ve taught me. I wanted to share this milestone with you as a testament to how your influence continues to shape my journey.

Producing & Executive Producing

Paterson has executive produced, produced, and acted as an associate producer on numerous classical albums for his own record labels (American Modern Recordings and Lumiere Records) and other labels. As a producer, he has worked with artists to conceive albums, choose or refine repertoire, and collaborate with engineers and other team members to ensure the album sounds as perfect as possible.

As an executive producer, his aim is to make the recording process as stress-free and relaxed as possible. He organizes budgets and business-related decisions and organizes recordings from start to finish with the producers. He works with clients to select recording-related crew, including music and/or record producers, performers, conductors, sound engineers, editors, mixing and mastering engineers, package designers, and PR and press teams. The albums he has executive produced have appeared on Grammy ballots and have received rave reviews in numerous publications, including The New York Times, Gramophone, Musical America, Opera News, Opera Magazine, and the ACDA Choral Journal. He continues to have great relationships with numerous Grammy-winning producers and recording engineers throughout the U.S. At this time, he only executive produces albums that include his music. Architectural Consulting for Music Buildings and halls

Paterson consults for architectural firms designing new music buildings for college campuses and music halls. He has a unique perspective concerning what details architectural firms should consider when building new buildings for music departments or in local communities. Architects often get the big picture right, i.e., the hall's design, but to most musicians, it's the details that matter, and that's where he can be of service. He will ensure that your building or hall will not only look beautiful but will function beautifully as well. Please inquire via the contact page for rates and availability.

Rob is an incredible advisor and consultant for performance facilities. With his long experience as a performing musician, an educator, and producer for music performance he has experienced countless venues across the nation and internationally, in short - he has seen it all! He advised me and my colleagues in the many issues and opportunities in developing a sound program and design for a music education and performance facility. He opened our eyes to things only a musician would know, greatly adding to our knowledge base. I highly recommend him as a resource for ‘getting it right’ when designing a new concert hall or a music education facility.
